It's often said that time is a great healer, and I gueessd in some ways that I agreed with the statement. But there were so many more reasons why I despaired hearing the patronizing sentence aloud. No inspiring words had managed to pull me through the last year and a half, instead strength had seen me through enough to move on with my life.Rejection is miserable enough, but to experience it more than a handful of times by the same person it makes you wise enough to move on and give up on the one person who was initially your everything. And after a year and a half of general chatter, little pretend smiles if we ever saw each other, I could safely say I'd finally completed what I wanted.I'd moved on.I had a boyfriend, a new one, who was lovely and romantic, and cared for me in every way I could possibly imagine.I had been lucky, in a way, to achieve becoming happy again so soon. Happier than I had been in such a long while.Time apart heals the pain that was once torn open by someone. It stitches your heart back together again, fixes it, so it almost looks shiny and new again. Though, of course, after heart break, there are still a few cracks visible to the eye, but it's fixed well enough for you to move on with your life freely. And you convince yourself that when you see him again, after such a long time apart, your heart won't care to notice, for it had moved on, same as you had. And you do it so well that you are so sure nothing will be there when you first glance across the room, and see them piercing green eyes that you once loved so dearly. You were different now, a changed person. You'd grown so much more confident in yourself, and you knew all too well who was the cause of that. And you loved him for that; he had given you so much, and you knew you could never repay him.So when you walked into college, showing off the boyfriend you had fallen head over heels in love with, you couldn't help but skip a little. Deep down, you felt really excited, and your mouth was starting to dry up from anticipation. You wasn't quite sure why, but you put it down to you being here with your boyfriend, and how much you had missed college over the spring holiday.Slowly, you both headed into the common room, and you laid your eyes on some of your boyfriend's old friends, who reacted in delight at seeing their friend, having missed him over the last couple of weeks. And that's when you felt it. That heavy, throbbing noise that your heart began to make. Beating faster in excitement, as your palms began to become moist in anticipation, and an irresistible smile forced its way back on your face without your permission.Just one look was enough to make you feel weak at the knees, and turn your hands a little shaky with nerves. His soft green eyes turned to look at you and he smiled instantly. It was a secret smile, one that was shared with just you and him, whilst the others gathered around their friend. He looked surprised, as though he could easily recognize the changed girl from a year ago from just the way she held herself.Behind the happy smile, she could see a sense of sadness and regret. He had let an amazing person slip through his fingers, but it was far too late for either of the two to do anything about it now. He had pushed her away far too many times, pushed her straight into the arms of another man. Another man that had been more than willing to fight for her, do anything for, love as though she had never been in love before. But her heart was foolish and yearned for something that was no longer around. And the both of them could sense that, in just that split second And then, the acting was back on. Acting as though they had never been one another's lover. Acting as though it was perfectly fine for the two of them to speak as friends, acting as both of them were blissfully happy for it to stay that way “Hey, you look well.” He commented correctly.Yes, she did put on quite a front, however, she was sure by the childlike excitement in her eyes, and the way she hadn't quite been able to tear her eyes away from him from the minute she saw him that she had given it all away.“Yeah, so do you.”This wasn't so much of a lie from her. She truly believed he really did look well, happy even. She could still sense a certain sadness in his eyes, but she also saw a certain reflection of freedom in his eyes too.Freedom to do whatever he chose. Freedom to have as many partners, serious, or otherwise, as he liked. And inside, despite all the moving on and changing she had done, it hurt a little to even imagine him with somebody else.“It's nice to see you.” He replied with a small but recognizable glint in his eyes. She could tell he truly meant it.“Yeah, same here.” She played it casual, because she knew she had to, but the both of them knew she meant every word of it.Her boyfriend nudged her on her arm playfully, telling her that he was getting ready to leave, before smiling at her ex, and shaking his hand. They were friends, the priority reason why, despite what both of them felt whenever they saw each other, nothing must never happen between them. They were willing to draw a line under all that history, their feelings, and know that it must always stay within the past.As her boyfriend turned back to say goodbye to some of his other friend's, her ex suggested a hug, unable to resist just that briefest of touches. She accepted, if not so willingly, the awkwardness of being around so many people always at the front of their mind. But neither could deny, the spark of even just that little touch, when their hands accidentally slipped past the others. And then as quick as that it had gone, and they both swiftly pulled away from each other, both unwilling to do so.They forced an awkward smile goodbye, without either of them saying so aloud. A siA simple “see you soon” was enough to finish the conversation, both hoping it really would be soon that they would meet again. And with that, the girl forced herself to head off with her boyfriend, that spark of excitement disappearing as soon as she had turned her back on him.And although it was the toughest thing to do, she didn't look back and linger her eyes on him once more. Despite everything they'd gone through, he had made his bed over a year and a half ago and she knew it had to be firmly kept in the past. However, despite his ability to let her go, her ex couldn't resist watching her as she walked away. Watching the biggest mistake he had made leave, knowing that something similar happened between the two.He made her watch him walk away from her, someone who she had once loved so much.He couldn't help but think that karma had come back and cruelly, made him pay the way she once had.
